2024 Heliophysics Summer School Recruitment Announcement
UCAR Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) partners with NASA to hold the Heliophysics Summer School each year. We invite you to apply for the 2024 NASA Heliophysics Summer School, which will be held in person this year, August 14-22, 2024. We are seeking students to join us this coming summer for a unique professional experience. They will learn about the exciting science of heliophysics as a broad, coherent discipline that reaches across space from the Earth’s troposphere to the depths of the Sun, and extends through time from the formation of the solar system to the distant future.
The Heliophysics Summer School focuses on the physics of core processes that describe the domains of the heliosphere (solar interior and corona, solar wind, magnetospheres, ionospheres, and the heliosphere boundary) and emphasizes the unifying concepts between these domains. The 2024 Summer School will focus on Comparative Heliophysics. During the Summer School, participants will explore how similar concepts and principles of heliophysics apply under different conditions. The Summer School will focus on universal processes in heliophysics such as dynamos, plasma flows, magnetic reconnection, and particle acceleration. Examples of these processes in action will include the dynamics and evolution of the Sun and other stars, solar and stellar atmospheres and winds, and planetary magnetospheres and ionospheres. The implications for planetary atmospheres and climate, planetary evolution, and exoplanetary habitability will be considered.
The school will be based on lectures, laboratories, and recitations from world experts, and will draw material from the textbook Principles of Heliophysics: a textbook on the universal processes behind planetary habitability, available online with free access. It will also make use of model results from the NASA Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC).
Approximately 25 students will be selected through a competitive process organized by CPAESS | UCAR. The 2024 Summer School will be held in person in Colorado, and each in-person participant receives full travel support to Boulder.
Student Application Requirements
- Currently enrolled as an advanced Graduate Student (PhD or senior Masters Student), or an early career researcher (postdoctoral, or within 3 years of obtaining a graduate degree).
- Studying physics, space and planetary science, astronomy, engineering, and other fields related to heliophysics.
- Pursuing a career in heliophysics or astrophysics
